CARD 46 - Korean War
Views of the War
North Korea President Kim Il Sung viewed the end of hostilities as a US surrender and a victory over US imperialism. North Korea gained political strength from this apparent victory.
South Korea Syngman Rhee retained power and limited support by the US. He established unstable but lasting foundations of the South Korean future.
United States This was the first "unpopular war" for the US. The US public and military both did not completely support and understand the reasons for the war. It was the first defeat in major battle for the US. Many felt that General MacArthur should have been allowed to advance further and conduct additional and larger campaigns against North Korea and China. MacArthur was held back by US policy and strategy differences between himself and President Truman. A massive arms buildup began.
East and West Arms buildup became the norm in the East and West due to the indeterminate ending of the war. The East and West arms race had now begun. Western Europe and Eastern Europe were caught in the middle of this struggle.
China China saw this as an affirmation of Chinese military strength and leadership. It was also seen as a defeat of the US, who failed to conquer Korea and take part of China.
