CARD 8 - Revolutionary War

Women in the Revolutionary War

The call to arms was for men. Several women wore the uniform, in disguise, of a Revolutionary soldier and fought against the British. Deborah Samson disguised herself as a young man and enlisted for the whole term of the war. Rachel and Grace Martin disguised themselves as men and fought a British courier and his guards. Anna Warner earned the title of "The Heroine of Groton" because of her fearless efforts to aid the wounded. Anna Bailey went from house to house collecting material for bandages. Margaret Corbin operated artillery when her husband fell by her side and took his place and performed his duties. Angelica Vrooman sat calmly during battle and molded bullets for the rangers. Mary Hagidorn, rather than following orders to hide with the woman and children in the cellar, fought along side men and helped repel a British attack.
