CARD 4 - Indian Wars I

Wars arose over Europeans desire for more land, the movement of tribes, and the dispossession of Indian culture. On both sides of the wars there were soldiers and warriors of courage, bravery, and principle, egomaniacs that slaughtered innocent women and children, and those who were peaceful and saw violence as a last resort.

The true story of Pocahontas.
Her real name was Matoaka. John Smith never reported being saved by Matoaka after his stay with the Powhatans. He first told the story 17 years after his stay with the Powhatans and after her death and fame in London society. Matoaka was taken prisoner by the English while she was on a social visit, and was held hostage at Jamestown for over a year. During her captivity, a 28-year-old widower named John Rolfe took an interest in the attractive young prisoner. She agreed to marry Rolfe in order to be freed. She was renamed "Rebecca Rolfe". Shortly after, they had a son. Two years later in 1616 Rolfe took her to England where the Virginia Company of London used her in their propaganda campaign to support the colony. She was wined and dined and taken to theaters. When she actually met John Smith again in England she called him a liar. Rolfe, his young wife, and their son set off for Virginia in March of 1617, but "Rebecca" became ill and had to be taken off the ship at Gravesend. She died there on March 21, 1617, at the age of 21. Her grave was destroyed in a reconstruction of the church. The colonists turned upon the Powhatan people who had earlier shared their resources with them and had shown them friendship. During Pocahontas' generation, Powhatan's people were decimated and dispersed and their lands were taken over.
